Brain Tumor


A brain tumor refers to the abnormal growth of cells within or in proximity to the brain. These tumors can originate within the brain tissue itself or in nearby regions, such as nerves, the pituitary gland, the pineal gland, or the protective membranes covering the brain’s surface.

There are two primary categories of brain tumors: primary and secondary. Primary brain tumors develop within the brain, while secondary brain tumors, also known as metastatic brain tumors, occur when cancer spreads from other parts of the body to the brain. Among primary brain tumors, there exists a wide range of types. Some are noncancerous, referred to as benign brain tumors, which may gradually increase in size and exert pressure on surrounding brain tissue. Conversely, malignant brain tumors, or brain cancers, can grow rapidly and invade and damage the brain tissue.

Brain tumors vary in size, ranging from minuscule to substantial. Some brain tumors become evident early due to noticeable symptoms, whereas others can grow significantly before detection. In certain instances, if a brain tumor emerges in a less active region of the brain, it may remain asymptomatic for an extended period, potentially reaching a considerable size before diagnosis. Treatment for brain tumors hinges on various factors, including the tumor type, size, and location, with common therapeutic options encompassing surgery and radiation therapy.
